Telephone lines open between 08:00 and 18:30 Monday - Friday. Surgery appointments can be booked up to four weeks in advance. Appointments can also be booked at reception.

Saturdays - There is no walk-in service available on Saturdays - appointments can ONLY be booked in advance.

Where possible you see your registered doctor for on-going health problems. We are a practice that values continuity of care. However this is not always possible at times of high demand and when doctors are on holiday. You will occasionally be offered an appointment with an alternative doctor when a problem cannot wait. You may also prefer to see a male or female doctor in certain situations. We will attempt to accommodate this where possible.

You will be able to consult online with your own GP with a response no later than the end of the next working day for clinical queries. Administration queries can take longer.

We offer pre-bookable telephone consultations. These are ideal for situations where an examination or face-to-face contact is not essential i.e. to discuss test results, medication queries, lifestyle advice, home blood pressure readings, or occasions where you are uncertain whether or not you need to see a doctor or nurse.

If you need help with interpreting or translation please advise reception at the time of booking so arrangements can be made.

Demand for appointments is increasing. Making the most efficient use of time is important for everybody. The traditional face-to-face appointment with a doctor or nurse is not always required. Here are some alternative ways of dealing with certain queries:

Urgent health concerns

Calling 999 is appropriate in the following life-threatening situations:

- sudden onset chest pain with shortness of breath or general unwellness
- difficulty breathing
- severe loss of blood
- severe burns or scolds
- choking
- unconsciousness not obviously a brief faint
- fitting
- severe allergic reaction 
- suspected broken bone resulting in inablity to move

If symptoms are not life- threatening but you feel require advice or assessment the same day, consider calling 111 for advice or contact Fleet Medical Centre to arrange a telephone or surgery appointment with the duty nurse practitioner or doctor.

If your concerns are not satisfied using the above, consider:

• discussing with your local pharmacist.
• booking a routine telephone appointment with a nurse or your usual GP.
• booking a routine surgery appointment with a nurse or usual GP if your concern is almost certainly going to require an examination or investigation.

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10:00am.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.

Be Prepared

• If you are anxious, then write down some points to act as a prompt during the consultation.
• Please avoid bringing several unrelated problems.
• Appointments are normally TEN minutes long - usually enough time to deal with ONE medical problem.
• Bring a list of any non-prescription medicines or supplements you are taking.
• Bring someone with you for support if needed.

During the Appointment

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
• If you don’t understand something, ask for the information to be written down.
• If you are prescribed a drug, make sure you understand why and how it is to be taken. The pharmacist is also a good source of advice.
• Be direct. Don’t leave embarrassing or difficult problems to the end. Remember, your problem is likely to be a common one for the doctor or nurse.

Separate Appointments

Make a separate appointment for each family member rather than expecting the doctor or nurse to deal with two patients in one appointment.

Keeping to Time

If you arrive more than ten minutes late for an appointment we cannot guarantee that you will be seen. The doctors will use their discretion based on the needs of other waiting patients. The doctor will try to keep to time but the complexity of other patients’ needs mean this is not always possible. To reduce the chance of appointments running late, please avoid bringing more than one unrelated problem.

It is important that you inform the reception staff if you are unable to attend your appointment, this will allow that appointment to be offered to another patient. If you fail to notify the Practice that you are unable to attend, you will be sent a letter informing you that you have defaulted from your appointment. Persistent defaulters maybe removed from the list.

You can also complete our appointment cancellation notification request form. This can only be used if your appointment has been arranged for more than 24 hours in advance. (excluding weekends and public holidays). You can also text to cancel your appointment.

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

We are a training practice and you may be offered an appointment with one of our GP Registrars or Foundation doctors. Both are fully qualified graduate doctors with experience in hospital posts. They are able to prescribe medication, order tests and refer to hospital specialities.

GP trainers often hold joint surgeries with the trainee and you will be informed of this when booking. If you prefer to see your GP alone then please tell the receptionist. Training doctors are regularly monitored and assessed. If you have and comments good or bad, please inform the practice manager or your GP.

GP Registrars will have experience in several hospital disciplines. They spend between 12 and 18 months with us to specialise in General Practice. Part of the training involves analysis of video consultations and you may be asked to participate in one of these. This is entirely voluntary but saying “yes” will be a great help to us. Foundation doctors have completed their medical degree and at least one year in 3 hospital specialities. They spend four months in General Practice. The experience is valuable for both a future career in General Practice or Hospital/community specialties.
